Meiku Charts' free treemap maker turns Group, Item and Value columns into nested rectangles, so you can explore a two-level total and export a PNG, SVG or live embed.
Read a budget at two levels
The example divides a city budget into public spaces, transport and community services. Each group has one color. An item worth twice as much gets twice the area, whether it belongs to a large group or a small one.
How to make a treemap
- Enter one item per row with its group and a positive value, or paste Group, Item and Value columns.
- Choose a theme, number format and decimal precision. Open a group to inspect its items.
- Download a PNG or SVG for a slide or document, copy the embed code for a web page, or copy a link that reopens the chart with your data.
Enter one item per row
Use Group for the department, Item for the service and Value for its budget. These three rows form two groups:
| Group | Item | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Public spaces | Parks | 32 |
| Public spaces | Libraries | 18 |
| Transport | Buses | 28 |
Paste a range from a spreadsheet into the grid, or choose Paste data or Open CSV. A table with Item and Value columns becomes one group. Group totals are calculated from the items.
Choose a shape for the comparison
A pie or donut shows one level of parts. A treemap adds groups around those parts. A stacked bar puts totals on a common axis, which helps when comparing group totals matters more than seeing the contents of each group.
When not to use a treemap
Similar areas are hard to compare precisely. Use a bar graph for close values, or a line or area chart to show how a total changes over time.
Can I add more than two levels?
This maker supports two levels: groups and their items. Use up to 6 groups and 36 items in total. Deeper hierarchies are not supported; combine levels in your source data before importing them.
Why can't values be zero or negative?
A tile's area represents its value. Negative area has no meaning, and zero has no visible area. Keep signed values in a table instead. Write No data for a missing value; it stays in the data table and tooltip without taking up area.
How do I read an item that is too small to label?
Hover or tap its tile to read the value, or use the arrow keys. Open its group for a closer view. Items too small to draw are listed below the chart and remain reachable with the keyboard.
Can I share an editable chart or export an image?
Export offers an editing link, a live embed, PNG and SVG. The editing link reopens the whole chart with its data and design. Download a draft from File to keep a local copy. Free exports carry the Meiku Charts mark; Pro removes it.
